Verse 23 – Lamps are useless unless you light them, and roads don’t take you anywhere unless you walk on them.
Commandments provide the mechanism for illumination, and law (“tora”, teaching) provides the light, and rebukes keep us traveling within the boundaries of the right road. Feels like there’s a lot to that metaphor.
Proverbs 6:32 points out that the sexual sin of committing adultery with a woman “destroys his own soul.” I think that is how a lot of sins could be described. They originate from a lack of sense and result in us hurting ourselves more. The rest of the chapter seems to indicate that the man who commits such an act had no idea what kind of damage it would cause.
“Proverbs 6:16-19 16 These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.”
This is a heavy set of scriptures! As I live by keeping my old way of life buried thru the power of the Holy Spirit living within me, I avoid the things God hates, but sometimes my carnal nature escapes and exaggerations or half truths slip out, especially if I am back into a corner emotionally by someone badgering me for an answer. It hasn’t happened in a while, but I must be on guard especially as society becomes darker and love waxing cold even within God’s Church.
