This proverb easily describes our society’s attitude about sin. When I was a teen the theme was “ if it feels good,do it “. That applied to sex, drugs, alcohol, and anything else. I knew of many who died young from “chasing themselves.” Many my age are even now suffering from decisions they made as teenager. Some who knew better but didn’t choose better. I myself fell many times with bad choices. Thankfully God opened my mind and gave me repentance before I could have destroyed myself. I often wish I could have had this understanding earlier in life. I know God is truly working in my life now and I am so thankful.
Amen. Thankfully God opened my mind and I finally responded at age 25 before I also destroyed myself. Now almost 52 years later I still shudder and hurt for those whether growing up in God’s Church or ignorant of His ways make decisions that will affect them throughout their lives.
In chapter one is was pointed out that “Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open square” (Proverbs 1:20). It is encouraging to know that wisdom is not trying to be hidden, but is readily available. Wisdom is something that you should grab ahold of. However, we are shown in Proverbs 7:12 that the harlot, which seems to represent wickedness in many forms is also in the open square at times. The two competing ways of life, righteousness and wickedness, both show up in the open square. One is crafty and the other is honest. One can be accepted and listened to, and the other must be cast aside.
Thank you, Jacob for showing this – both true godly wisdom and carnal earthy “wisdom” cry out. It is sad to see which society is choosing in ignorance. However, we who know the Way of righteousness must be on guard against our carnal nature.
Yeah—I love the way the book is set up to show how difficult they can be to tell apart unless you look at their words. Recognizing the voice of wisdom is paramount.
24 Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; 26 For she has cast down many wounded,…”
Going beyond the necessity of the physical warnings of this chapter, I am reminded to apply this spiritually.
We must be mindful to not stray from God’s path by getting snared with curiosity false perspectives, twigs that would lead us astray from truth. We must stick close to the trunk of the tree for it is on the branches and twigs, that many have fallen.
