I love this love story! So much to learn from here Naomi was blessed so much and that blessing continued on today for us in Christ. I’ve heard it commented that but todays standard Naomi didn’t seem to have any say so in any of this legal wrangling .But in my mind she a great part on this , in that she relies on God to work it out . The faith of Ruth in is incredible. I just love this book
I found this footnote at the end of the NET Bible: “God’s rewards for those who sacrificially love others sometimes exceed their wildest imagination and transcend their lifetime.”
That’s such a beautiful thought. Ruth and Boaz are both people willing to sacrifice in order to serve. And they both became part of something bigger than they could have possibly imagined!
And agreed, Naomi played a huge role in this story. Ruth would have been lost without her guidance, I think!
“Friend” in verse 1 actually being a translation for the Hebrew equivalent of “So-and-so” will always be one of my favorite pieces of Bible trivia.
I did some research on So-and-so’s right of redemption. I never understood his worry that redemption would ruin his inheritance. It seems like one strong possibility is that redeeming the land would have been essentially a gift—it would be redeemed for Ruth (and Malon’s) heir, and So-and-so would lose it without being reimbursed when the time came. It was clearly going to be a financial hit to him, at any rate.
So on top of Boaz’s previous kindness, he was willing to take that (extreme) financial hit. Ruth’s first child wouldn’t be his heir, he likely wouldn’t ever be reimbursed for the land he was redeeming—but he was determined to take care of her, at whatever cost.
Boaz also seems to have been shrewd in how he pitched the whole situation. He made sure Ruth would be taken care of by making marrying her a public issue—not something So-and-so could ignore in private. (The whole town knew about Ruth—surely he wasn’t blindsided by this responsibility. Maybe he just hoped to quietly sidestep it and gain the land for himself.)
Just found this site this morning! Was reading in Leviticus and wondered how the Israelites handled moving camp so often with a tabernacle none the less… Of course ! I had to read the “Chumps who moved the Tabernacle!” LOL. now I found your daily reading section.
Who doesn’t love the book of Ruth? All women do I’m pretty sure. I have never observed the mention of “So and So” ever before and the CJB uses “Such and such”. I actually considered for a minute you had lost your mind. God sure has such a sense of humor. I also just now realized Ruth has a baby and her mother in law basically becomes the mom? Or maybe just the nanny?( does nurse mean possibly the wet nurse?)(idk but if that was my baby I might have some strong feelings about all this.) Hopefully Ruth had more children? Maybe it didn’t matter because they all lived together. I also found it interesting the ” women” got to name the baby….life had to be so hard for women esp in those days…but I’m sure Ruth was so humble, and she most certainly was confident in God’s love for her, her baby, her mother in law and husband. She is definitely an example for women and a hero of the Bible.
As with everyone I also love the Book of Ruth and ponder on how Jesus Christ is our Redeemer as Boaz was for Ruth.
Many, many years ago I watched a black & white movie with Richard Widmark as Boaz. I don’t remember it the movie was titled Boaz or was titled Ruth, but I remember it impact on me to this day
